Jewelries can be worn singly or in combination to enhance the look of the wearers. Like other fashion pieces, the ‘rules’ binding how jewelry pieces can be combined change over time to meet with trends that are in vogue. Despite the fact that trends change, there are some rules in fashion that are eternal. For example, rules like, ‘your belt and shoes must be of the same color’ is an eternal fashion rule that should never be broken, unless you wish to be seen as a fashion felon. The same applies to accessorising your jewelries. There are some accessory rules that cannot and must not be broken.

WHAT KIND OF EARRINGS SHOULD I WEAR TOGETHER WITH MY NECKLACE?
Now that it has been established that earrings can be worn together with a necklace, it is important to note that, not every necklace type goes together with every earring type. There are many fashion rules one has to abide by when combining these jewelry pieces.
Below are 7 rules one should take note of in combining these jewelry pieces.
RULE ONE: YOUR EARRINGS SHOULD MATCH YOUR NECKLACE IF YOU ARE WEARING A WHOLE LOT OF JEWELRY PIECES
If you are someone that enjoys wearing many jewelry pieces all at one, it is best you try to reduce the disparity between the different pieces. This is because, when each piece you are wearing is made from a different material, stone and/or metal your whole outfit becomes shouty. So to avoid this, it is best if some of the pieces are matching pieces. This is in order to reduce the “crowd” on your body. On that note, it is advised that your necklace and earrings at least are matching sets.
RULE TWO: MIX METALS -YOUR EARRINGS AND NECKLACES MAY BE MADE FROM SIMILAR OR DIFFERENT METALS
In time past, wearing different jewelry pieces made from different metals was a fashion faux pas. Those years someone wearing a platinum necklace with gold earrings is said to have committed a fashion blunder. Nowadays, those boring rules no longer apply. To get the best from combining your necklaces and your earrings, wearing necklaces made from a different metal from your necklace is a very interesting, yet valid, option.
RULE THREE: PAIR THEM UP- OLD AND NEW
Your everyday pieces define your style. You may have a necklace you wear everyday. It is okay to wear this piece together with a new pair of earrings you just purchased. Combining old and new earrings and necklace is not a bad idea. You don’t have to buy everything new if you are not ready to get a new piece yet. Combine them up – old and new.
RULE FOUR: PAIR THEM UP- UNMATCHING SETS
This is 2021. Most archaic rules in fashion no longer apply. In fact we can actually say we are in an era of fashion boldness and freedom. One can choose to bend the rules a little, provided they aren’t breaking the ‘eternal fashion rules’. The same thing applies to combining jewelries. In the past, wearing unmatching sets of jewelry is a very uncool practice, but now it is the new cool.
Take the liberty of wearing earrings and necklaces that are not a pair. Wear a necklace with a pair of earring with different stones. Wear pearl necklaces with metallic earrings. Mix them provided they are cool considering your taste and style. While at this make sure it is not done in excess, so you’re complete outfit doesn’t look ridiculous. Make sure they complement each other!
RULE FIVE: PAIR THEM UP- STATEMENT PIECES AND SIMPLE ONES
When you are wearing a statement necklace, tone down on the earrings- wear simple ones. Also, if your earrings are a statement pair, your necklaces should be simple ones. It is advised that you only wear one statement piece at a time. When you wear an elaborate necklace together with elaborate earrings your statement becomes too loud and this is not very cool. If they are both elaborate, do make sure they are matching pairs.
RULE SIX: PAIR THEM UP – SIMILAR THEMES
Pair similar jewelry themes together. This is not a compulsory rule but it make you look cool. For instance, when wearing a thin metallic necklace with a heart shaped pendant, you may want to wear it together with a pair of earrings with heart shape. Also, these that are not similar but are of a particular origin can be paired together. For example, a pendant with a theme from Africa can be worn with a pair of earrings having African themes too.
RULE SEVEN: PAIR THEM UP – COMPLEMENTING COLORS
Your earrings and necklaces doesn’t necessarily have to be of similar colors. Wearing jewelries of similar colors is an old rule that is caged your fashion freedom. It is so last-season. Provided the COLOR of your jewelries complement each other, you are good to go. The colors don’t necessarily have to be the same, although it is not bad if the former is the case.
WHEN YOU MAY NOT NEED TO WEAR A NECKLACES WITH YOUR EARRINGS
There are times when you do not need to wear necklaces even when you are not wearing earrings. Below are instances where wearing a necklace is not needed.
- When your clothing features bold prints or conspicuous patterns.
- When you have a wide or short neck type
- You do not use a necklace when you are wearing a turtleneck
- When you wear an oversized sweater
- When it is not your style
You can choose to wear any combination of jewelry you so wish to provided you are not breaking any fashion rules; you can wear a necklace with earrings. They accentuate your looks. Although, wearing these jewelry pieces are not compulsory. You may choose not to wear them if they are just not your style or if they seem inappropriate with your dressing or for the occasion.
